In The Fault in Our Stars, John Green has created a soulful novel that tackles big subjects--life, death, love--with the perfect blend of levity and heart-swelling emotion. Hazel is sixteen, with terminal cancer, when she meets Augustus at her kids-with-cancer support group. The two are kindred spirits, sharing an irreverent sense of humor and immense charm, and watching them fall in love even as they face universal questions of the human condition--How will I be remembered? Does my life, and will my death, have meaning?--has a raw honesty that is deeply moving. The moving  film adaptation was released in 2014.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

In memory of Harper Lee we are revisiting this classic published in 1960. It was immediately successful, winning the Pulitzer Prize, and has become a classic of modern American literature. The plot and characters are loosely based on the author's observations of her family and neighbors, as well as on an event that occurred near her hometown in 1936, when she was 10 years old. The classic film starring Gregory Peck is always worth watching again! This is also an opportunity to read “Go Set a Watchman, “the only other novel Ms. Lee wrote, which was released last year.

Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout

Elizabeth Strout’s Pulitzer Prize winning book is a collection of stories about a group of ordinary people living in a small town in Maine, their joys, sorrows, tragedies and grief, all centered around the main character, Olive Kitteridge. The 4-part Emmy Award winning mini-series, first aired on HBO stars Frances McDormand, Richard Jenkins and Bill Murray. While longer than the usual feature film, it will make perfect watching for these cold February nights.
