Louisa May Alcott, who spent much of her childhood amid an intellectual circle that included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Thoreau, and Nathaniel Hawthorne, embarked on her own literary efforts at an early age. Her recently discovered first novel, The Inheritance, written when Alcott was just 17, offers readers a fascinating look at the birth of a remarkable career. Set in an English country manor, it is the story of Edith Adelon, an Italian orphan brought to England by Lord Hamilton as a companion for his children. With a charm reminiscent of Jane Austen's novels, Alcott's plot sets love and courtesy against depravity and dishonor.

True Grit by Charles Portis

Portis’s novel is narrated by Mattie Ross, a thrifty, churchgoing elderly spinster distinguished by intelligence, independence, and strength of mind. She recounts the story of her adventures many years earlier, at the age of fourteen, when she undertook quest to avenge her father’s death at the hands of a drifter named Tom Chaney. She is joined on her quest by Marshal Ruben J. “Rooster” Cogburn and a Texas Ranger  named LaBoeuf (pronounced "La-beef").  The 2010 film adaptation directed by the Coen brothers stars Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon.

Killing Kennedy: The End of Camelot is a 2012 non-fiction book by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard about the 1963 assassination of U.S. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The authors narrate the events leading up to the assassination of as well as the event's aftermath. O'Reilly and Dugard also focus on the element of the growing Cold War, Kennedy's attempt to deal with the rise of Communism, and the potential threat from organized crime. The 2013 made for television adaptation stars Rob Lowe.

WWII was the most destructive war in history and caused the greatest dislocation of cultural artifacts. Hundreds of thousands of items remain missing. The main burden fell to a few hundred men and women, curators and archivists, artists and art historians from 13 nations. Their task was to save and preserve what they could of Europe's great art, and they were called the Monuments Men. This is their story. The 2014 film adaptation was directed by and stars George Clooney along with Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman and Cate Blanchett.

“Cheaper by the Dozen” is a biographical novel written by Frank Bunker Gilbreth, Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey that tells the story of time and motion study and efficiency experts Frank Bunker Gilbreth and Lillian Moller Gilbreth, and their twelve children. The book focuses on the many years the family resided in Montclair, New Jersey. It was adapted to film by Twentieth Century Fox in 1950.The comedic 2003 remake of the 1950 film adaptation stars Steve Martin, Hilary Duff and Bonnie Hunt.
